Overview

The 22614VIC Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship describes the entry level skills and knowledge needed in the carpentry industry. Preparing to work safely in the construction industry is imperative and this course is contextualised to the Carpentry stream.

This accredited course is a pathway into a Certificate III apprenticeship and will not lead to employment in the Construction sector on its own.

Your training will focus on:

  • Applying basic leveling procedures

  • Carrying out basic measurements and calculations

  • Communicating in the workplace

  • Erecting and safely using working platforms

  • Interpreting basic plans and drawings

  • Preparing and applying for work in the construction industry

  • Working effectively and sustainably in the construction industry

  • Onsite workplace safety practices

  • How to participate in health and safety processes

Standard Duration: 2 years (typically Year 11 and Year 12 school years)

Job Roles

The 22614VIC Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship is designed as a pathways qualification, providing learners with the skills and knowledge to undertake an apprenticeship within the building and construction industry.

 

The combined skills and knowledge of the pre-apprenticeship course does not provide for a job outcome as a qualified tradesperson as this course is intended to prepare individuals for further training.

Delivery Mode

Academy Training & Assessment offers this course through an auspice arrangement with secondary schools and colleges. 

​

Teachers deliver this accredited course to secondary school students as part of their VET studies with Academy Training & Assessment responsible for enrolment, registration and certification.

Assessment

Assessment may consist of:

  • Knowledge questions for student to answer

  • Practical activities (demonstrating carpentry activities)

  • Holistic assessment

Academy Training & Assessment offer both online Learner Management System (LMS) and hard copy resources. This choice is to offer as much flexibility for the school, teacher and student.

​

Evidence may be:

  • Written (using student workbooks or electronic input into LMS portal)

  • Direct observation by teacher of students undertaking activities 

  • Interview/verbal question to ensure comprehension

  • Audio/video recordings (if applicable)

  • Documents/work instructions (such as copies of Risk Assessments)

Entry Requirements

Students must be willing and able to work in the workshop at school and use carpentry tools and equipment.

All students will engage in a language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LLND) activity to evaluate potential support requirements. 
This is emailed to all students prior to enrolment and must be completed before access to their online Enrolment Form.

Units

The 22614VIC Certificate II in Building and Construction consists of 19 units:

  • 9 core units

  • 10 elective units

 

All 10 electives are mandatory if aiming to achieve the full Certificate.

Fees and Subsidies

This qualification is offered to secondary schools on a fee for service basis via an auspice arrangement.

​

There are two fees:

1. Student enrolment, registration and certification
2. VET Materials (the learning and assessment resources, per unit)
